She's worn slabs of raw meat, she's emerged from a giant egg, and she's worn heels so ridiculously high that runway models have refused to wear them. In only a few years, Lady Gaga has defined herself as the living epitome of avant garde. Her style has been copied by artists worldwide.
At the 2011Video Music Awards, the Gaga-style was spotted everywhere, including on the likes of Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry. Nicki Minaj wore practically all of Gaga's previous outfits at once, sporting an ensemble complete with cotton candy pink and yellow swirled hair and stuffed animals hanging off of her in all directions. Katy Perry, like Nicki Minaj, also wore her hair in a pink color, but opted for an Asian geisha look. She accessorized appropriately with a giant, seafoam green paper parasol. On the red carpet, fashion critics commented that perhaps this year, Lady Gaga would not be the standout fashionista. How could she, if there were so many celebrities dressed in the same way she usually did? However, there is only one Gaga. Later, emerging from the stage was Jo Calderone, or the alter ego of Lady Gaga, dressed as... a man, and performing the song, "You and I."
As an artist, she continually pushes limits. If you try to dress crazier than she does, she will show up as well-dressed man. To me, this wasn't merely a performance, but a message. Keep progressing. No one can steal your spotlight or can be a better you than you are.
